FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

We have homes available for rent across the Midlands. Here are some frequently asked questions about the way we let our homes:

What is the housing register?
It is a list of people who have applied to Midland Heart for help with housing.

What is it for?
To help Midland Heart make sure that housing goes to the people in greatest need.

Who can apply to register?
Anyone who is over the age of eighteen and lives in the United Kingdom. The law says that some people who have lived abroad or are moving here from abroad cannot be registered.

Midland Heart tenants wanting to move to another home in Midland Heart should also complete the application form.

How do I register for housing?
Applications are completed over the phone via our Customer Service Centre.

What happens next?
We will look at your form and decide how many points you are awarded according to your need for housing. Sometimes we also need to talk to other people such as doctors or social workers.

We will let you know how many points you have and what this means for you. We can also talk to you about other possible ways of solving your housing problems.

If you owe rent to Midland Heart or to the council, to a housing association, housing charity or housing trust, you will need to sort out these arrears before you can be considered for an offer of housing.

If legal action has been taken against you for anti-social behaviour, damage, nuisance or harassment you will not be considered for housing until the issue has been resolved.

What areas can I choose to live in?
You can choose to live in whichever area you wish from the list providing the waiting list is open in that area. If the area is covered by Choice Based Lettings you will need to apply direct through the relevant provider.

If you have special circumstances which make it difficult for you to choose a Neighbourhood Area, please discuss it with us.

Will I get a home?
We cannot guarantee to offer everyone on the housing register a home. When a home is available it is offered to the person at the top of the housing register. This is the person in the highest need who has been waiting for the longest time. A person can only receive three offers in a year.

What do I do if I can no longer stay at my present address?
You should contact your local council as soon as possible to discuss your options. If you are already a Midland Heart tenant you should talk to your Neighbourhood Services Officer.

Don't forget!
If your situation changes and especially if you move house it is important that you let us know. We can only help you if you keep us informed.

What happens if I disagree with the assessment of my housing needs?
You can ask us to review the decision. This will be carried out by a Housing Manager. If you still disagree with the decision you can appeal.

Confidentiality
We will treat all information you give to Midland Heart as strictly confidential.

Equal opportunities
We believe it is important that everyone in need has equal access to the homes we provide. It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of their sexuality, age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief.

You can help by completing the equal opportunities section on the housing register application form. This will enable us to check that everyone is treated fairly.
