Midland Heart receives prestigious housing award

CIH awards 2015

Our flagship supported housing scheme in Dudley has taken the title of ‘Development of the year’ at the annual Midlands Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) awards.

Saltbrook Place in Lye is a high quality, contemporary, supported resident development for the region’s vulnerable adults and homeless. Built on the site of a former homeless hostel the project offers structured support and accommodation with an extensive range of facilities enabling customers to make the transition to a settled home.

Carl Larter, director of assets at Midland Heart, said: “We are thrilled to receive this award recognising the positive impact Saltbrook Place is providing our customers and the wider community. This project is helping to motivate and engage vulnerable men and women from the Dudley area to help them rebuild their lives and progress to living independently. It is also playing an important role in preventing rough sleeping in the region”.

The £5.7m scheme which received funding support from the Homes and Communities agency is the result of a successful partnership between Midland Heart, Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and contractor United Living.

Richard Baker, business unit director (West Midlands), said: “Working on the rebuild and refurbishment of Saltbrook Place for Midland Heart has been an absolute pleasure.  This award is simply the icing on the cake.  Having the scheme recognised in this way is not only a great boost for our team but more importantly, it puts a spotlight on the social value of the work that we undertake.  Saltbrook is an important development on our portfolio and we’re humbled that with these improvement works, Midland Heart can now offer an even higher standard of care for the homeless and vulnerable people who are living on-site.”

The project has transformed the area benefiting the residents of Lye who have access to the many facilities on offer including an IT Suite, gym, meeting rooms and the opportunity to get involved in gardening as part of an allotment scheme.

The CIH annual awards recognise housing excellence in the Midlands with the Development of the year award going to the housing scheme that has met a specific housing need and demonstrates high levels of design, sustainability and build quality. The judges also considered involvement with the local community to ensure the creation of community facilities or employment opportunities for local people.
