Homeless surgery celebrates second birthday
Our homeless surgery in Birmingham has celebrated its second birthday this week.
Held on the last Tuesday of every month at the Homeless Service Centre in Digbeth, the surgery has helped over 500 rough sleepers since it started in 2014, supporting an average of 25-30 people a month.
Offering rough sleepers an opportunity to get a hot meal, health checks and clothing the homeless surgery also provides support and advice as well as a chance to socialise with others.
Amanda Nicklin, Homeless Services Centre Manager at Midland Heart said: “The monthly surgery has been a huge success and is enjoyed by customers, agencies and staff alike. We put on film nights, play board games, have listened to the Choir With No Name and run other activities that our customers really enjoy. It is a pleasure to provide a couple of hours for customers to not only receive support but to also engage with us and have some fun”.
The homeless surgery is possible thanks to the kind support from local businesses, charities and groups who all work together to give their time and resources to help Birmingham’s rough sleepers.
Long standing supporters of the surgery include Midland Langar Seva Society who provide free meals, a local hairdresser who provides free hair cuts and beard trims, PSCO Zoe Bishop from West Midlands Police who helps organise and run the event, Vision Care for Homeless People who provide free eye tests, the Big Issue who offer job opportunities, the Health Exchange who provide health advice, Community Dental Service, and charity Socks and Chocs who provide donations of socks, gloves, hats, personal care goods and of course chocolate!
PCSO Zoe Bishop said: "I would like to thank all the different services who pull together to make the surgery possible. Without their continued support we would not have been able to provide such a great service for the last two years".
If you spot someone sleeping rough you can connect them with local support by using StreetLink or by calling the Rough sleepers Outreach Team on 0345 6020533 or 07483 981 912.
