JLR volunteers take the bait

A group of volunteers from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have hooked up with customers from Midland Heart for a day of fishing and fun to help them take their first step towards social engagement and building confidence.

The four volunteers accompanied 14 customers from across Midland Heart’s inclusion services in Birmingham on its annual fishing trip to Albrighton Moat and Gardens in Staffordshire.

With rods at the ready, the band of volunteers helped customers get hooked up with bait and ensured the novices in the group were ready to help win one of the many competitions taking place throughout the day including awards for the ‘Most Caught Fish’ and ‘Catch of the Day’.Jlr Fishing Trip

The fishing trip forms part of Midland Heart’s inclusion services’ event programme which helps individuals overcome personal barriers through empowerment and achievement as Raj Shroff, Midland Heart’s deputy director of Care & Support and Head of Inclusion Services explained:

“The fishing trip is often a key stepping stone in engagement for many of our customers as it enables them to build relationships in a relaxed, enjoyable setting with the opportunity to feel a sense of accomplishment. I would like to thank JLR for their support and continued contribution to our customer’s lives.

“The support of the volunteers from JLR has been amazing and we could not have done it without them.  They manned the platforms, helped with the bait and showed complete novices how to land their catches – nothing was too much trouble.

“In the space of just one day you can see a real difference just by taking customers out of their everyday routine and engaging with new people.  JLR’s volunteers have helped in more ways than one as this positive experience will have a greater impact as the customers return home with a new found confidence.”

It is the first time JLR has supported Midland Heart and forms part of JLR’s volunteer programme which encourages every employee to volunteer time to projects in nearby communities.

Alan Chamberlain, senior manager of UK construction operations at JLR responsible for the group of volunteers, says: “Part of JLR’s core values and objectives is to give back to the communities we are based within.  Often this means the benefits of creating jobs in that area but we also aim to work with people in less fortunate circumstances.

“We have all had a great time and it is events like this where we can see how we make a positive contribution to the local community.  The day has been hugely rewarding.”

This is the fourth year the annual fishing trip has taken place.
