Midland Heart supports call for more housing for older people

Extra Care bannerAlongside other leading housing organisations, Midland Heart has provided key evidence to help make the case for improved housing options for older people, contributing to a high profile government inquiry.

Last week The Communities and Local Government (CLG) Select Committee published an influential new report calling on the Government to develop a new strategy for housing Britain’s aging population. The report called for reforms to the planning system to encourage the development of more specialist housing suitable for older people, as well as additional support for older people looking to downsize

As a leading provider of affordable homes, Midland Heart recognises the need to improve the range of housing options available to older people. High quality specialist accommodation can help older people to maintain their independence for longer whilst also freeing up family homes for the next generation, helping to tackle the housing crisis.

Midland Heart has a proud history of bringing forward innovative new housing schemes that promote independent living for older people. Based on our experience, we made a number of key recommendations, which have been adopted by the committee, including a requirement for local authorities to include specific targets for older person’s housing in their local plans.

We know there are already thousands of older people across the Midlands in need of more appropriate housing and this number is only going to increase with time. We are committed to working with Government to develop a new strategy to meet these needs and provide truly aspirational homes for older people.
