Carers Week 2018

Carers Week is designed to recognise the contribution that carers make to families and communities across the UK. The week, which runs from 11-17 June, also aims to bring awareness to the challenges which carers face.

Carers UK are looking at ways that we can support carers to stay healthy and connected. The aim is to build communities which support carers in looking after their loved ones well, while recognising their health and wellbeing needs too.Carers Week 2016

There has been a report published by Carers UK on 'Supporting Carers to be Healthy and Connected'. You can read the full report here which discusses the impact being a carer has on physical and mental health.

We have lots of informal carers living in our properties and want to help by looking at ways we can support carers to stay healthy and connected but also draw attention to just how important caring is.

We spoke to one of customers, Miss Y, who is a full time carer for her mother.

“I’ve been a full time carer for my diabetic mother since September 2017. I became a carer full time when there were no longer other family members able to look after her around the clock.

“I previously worked as a carer full time professionally for over 20 years. Being a carer is rewarding but also very challenging, I would say that caring for someone you love is the hardest thing you can do. It’s both emotionally and physically challenging.

“Some of my duties include bathing mum, cooking, keeping mum company, sorting mums finances and administering her medication.

“When working as a carer professionally there are policies and procedures that you absolutely must stick to. I think this is something that mum and I are both adjusting to at the moment.

“I have one day a week to myself when I return home and I am able to recharge.

“My advice to anybody caring for a loved one is that you have to have a lot of patience and a lot of love.”
