Affordable Housing Commission: our response
Think-tank The Smith Institute has launched a commission about affordable housing, chaired by leading housing industry figure Lord Best. Over the next 18 months, the commission will gather evidence and talk to different bodies to pinpoint the problems with the current system and learn how housing could be made more affordable around the country.
We took the opportunity to tell them what we think would help housing associations like us to provide more affordable homes, and to do it faster and better.
The main points we have raised are:
- Local councils need more resources to support developers and housing associations to build good quality affordable homes
- The planning system needs to be improved and to focus more on areas outside London and the South East
- New developments need to have a better mix of housing types and people to live in them, to create balanced communities where people want to live and choose to stay.
