Keeping yourself safe
Sometimes things don’t always go to plan, so giving our colleagues the right equipment when they’re out and about on their own is crucial in keeping them safe.
We supply all of our lone workers with the Soloprotect Identicom devices. Before each visit, they leave a message stating their location and can raise an alarm if they are in danger. We also provide colleagues with personal safety training to ensure they know what to do if they have concerns about a situation.
People Officer, Sam* was assaulted by a customer at an eviction, but the Soloprotect Identicom device they were using helped alert police to be able to arrest the attacker. During the assault, the customer pulled off Sam's Identicom which activated it and it began recording the incident and the police arrived quickly to the scene.
Sam said: “It was extremely frightening, in 30 years of working in housing, this is only the second time I have had anything like this happen, and because the device started recording there is now evidence available for the police to use.”
“I activate the Identicom whenever I am out of the office so if I am involved in an accident and unable to call for help, someone else can for me.”
But, it’s not just about keeping our colleagues safe – we all want to be as safe as possible when out and about. Here are some personal safety tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Try to stay in well-lit, busy areas
- Plan your journey and look confident
- Make sure someone knows your plans
- Don’t keep valuables all in one place – spread them between your bag, coat and pockets
- Consider carrying a personal safety alarm
