Our CEO is short-listed for ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ awards

Ruth Cooke - CEO at Midland HeartOur chief executive officer (CEO), Ruth Cooke, has been short-listed in this year’s prestigious ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ awards.

Ruth is among 6 finalists in the running for the top title whose previous winners include Baroness Karren Brady CBE, Sharon Redrobe OBE, Hilary Devey CBE and last year’s winner - Jacqui O’Donovan.

A celebration of outstanding achievements of women across the UK, the annual awards seek to promote positive female roles across business and champion those who have made a major contribution to the financial success of an organisation.

Ruth’s nomination is testament of the commitment and resourcefulness of turning around our financial position from that of making a loss when she joined Midland Heart as finance director in 2008 into recording a £40m surplus in 2017.

Since her appointment as CEO in 2012, Ruth has not only improved our overall performance, but improved staff morale and levels of engagement whilst increasing customer satisfaction by 10 per cent.

Ruth has led us through our response to changes in government policy, a complete re-configuration of the business which led to us exiting almost 50 per cent of our care and support contracts, as well as the unwinding of a joint venture which will bring back into direct management 1,000 properties and several hundred staff.

Speaking about the nomination and being short-listed, Ruth Cooke says: “The success of Midland Heart is not just down to the work I do, but those of my colleagues who work every single day to support our customers to live independently.

“As an organisation we are fully committed to diversity and equality, and although there are challenges in finding the right balance we are on the right track.

“To be nominated by my peers for such a prestigious award is an unexpected honour and I cannot wait for the event.”

In addition to her role as CEO at Midland Heart, Ruth is chair of Connexus Housing and vice-chair of the Social Housing Pension Scheme which manages over £2billion of pension assets.

In its 35th year, the Businesswoman of the Year awards will take place on Friday 06 October at the Hilton Metropole, NEC, Birmingham.
