Midland Heart wraps up grant for insulating homes

More than 160 Midland Heart properties have benefitted already this cold snap from having had free cavity wall insulation installed in their homes to help reduce their electricity bills.

The free insulation is thanks to our wrapping up a grant worth up to £1million from a funding scheme run by an energy supplier via the Warmfront Team, a leading provider of insulation services and energy efficient measures.

Over 900 all-electric properties owned by Midland Heart are being assessed for suitability for the cavity wall insulation – and the figure is predicted to rise as further eligible homes are identified.

The properties – around 800 flats, 50 bungalows and 50 houses – are across the Midlands region including Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Coventry, Northampton and Birmingham.

The programme of work started on December 17, 2018 and is set to conclude summer 2020. The work involves blowing insulating material into cavities to create a ‘quilt’ effect around the property, reducing heat loss and keeping the property warmer.

As part of the programme each property insulated is given an Energy Performance Certificate (EPO) which is required for every building constructed, let or sold. The certificate provides information on the energy efficiency of the building. Each certificate would normally cost the building owner £50.

Robert Kraska, Senior Contracts Manager, said: “Through this substantial grant programme for cavity wall insulation tenants living in eligible properties will benefit from a warmer home environment whilst saving on their electricity bills.

“We are also taking the opportunity to insulate any eligible void homes and properties due for refurbishment, as well as some properties where there have been damp issues due to failed fibre insulation. Replacing the cavity wall insulation should help to prevent these problems.”

Alex Hearn, Director of the Warmfront Team, said: “Around a third of all heat lost in an property without insulation is through the walls so there are many benefits to getting cavity wall insulation including saving around £140 a year on energy bills, reducing heat loss, fuel consumption and your home carbon footprint.

“We are very pleased to be working with Midland Heart to help reduce fuel poverty among its customers and improve the quality of its housing stock.”
