After a change in circumstances left a tenant's Universal Credit payments covering only half the rent, our Money Advisor Bradley stepped in to help reduce her rent arrears and protect her tenancy.
The background
Miss A* was referred to our Money Advice team after her rent arrears began to increase. Bradley quickly identified that Universal Credit was only paying 50% of her housing costs.
This was because Miss A was still listed as a joint tenant with her ex-partner, who had recently left the home following the breakdown of their relationship. Although Miss A remained responsible for the full rent, Universal Credit was only paying her half, which meant arrears were building up.
How we helped
Bradley gave Miss A a key statement to share with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This explained that she was responsible for 100% of the rent and that her housing costs should be paid in full.
He also worked closely with one of our Rent Payment Officers to provide the DWP with confirmation of the tenancy details, making sure they had the evidence they needed to update the claim as quickly as possible.
Bradley’s quick thinking helped stop Miss A’s rent arrears from building up further and supported her to protect her tenancy during what was an already challenging time.
The outcome
At their highest, Miss A’s rent arrears reached £1,651.48. Since the Universal Credit issue was resolved, her arrears have reduced to £749.41.
Miss A now has an affordable repayment plan of £150 per month in place to clear the remaining balance, giving her better financial stability and helping her stay on track with her rent.
