What is National Hoarding Awareness Week?
Hoarding Awareness Week (11–15 May) is about raising awareness, reducing the stigma around hoarding and encouraging people to get the support they need.
Hoarding isn’t being ‘messy’ or ‘lazy’ – it’s recognised by the NHS as a complex mental health disorder that can affect people’s wellbeing, relationships and safety at home.
Raising awareness with empathy can help reduce the shame surrounding hoarding and create a safe space for those struggling to get help.
What is hoarding?
Hoarding is when someone finds it difficult or impossible to throw things away, even if they’re of little value. This can lead to clutter building up around their home, making it harder to live safely and comfortably.
Hoarding behaviour is often linked to poor mental health due to grief, past trauma or big life changes. That’s why it’s important if someone you know is experiencing hoarding, they’re supported with care, empathy and patience.

Why is there so much shame around hoarding?
People who experience hoarding disorder don’t choose to live this way. Their fear of being judged or embarrassed can delay help and make things worse. Hoarding Awareness Week helps to challenge this stigma through honest and compassionate conversations to support those who are struggling.
