Read how our Tenancy Services Officer, Ann, supported an elderly tenant who was living alone and struggling with poor mobility, safely return home.

The background

Our Tenancy Services team plays an important role in understanding our tenants’ needs and helping them get the right support to keep them safe and happy in their homes.

When our tenant had to go to hospital after a fall, it was clear that her home was no longer safe for her to live in. But having lived there since birth, our tenant shared a deep connection with her home and wanted to stay there.

How we helped

Ann spoke to the tenant and found she was mentally alert and didn’t want to move into a care home. Ann respected her wishes and worked closely with her nominated representative and adult social care team to make sure the right decisions were made, and that our tenant didn’t go back home until it was safe.

At the same time, Ann also worked with our in-house maintenance, gas, planning and environmental teams to get improvement work started at the tenant’s home. This included installing a new central heating system and electrical sockets, repairing external door locks, and cleaning the home. She also reached out to local charities and community support groups to find essential household items to help our tenant live in her home safely and comfortably.

Our tenant was extremely anxious and concerned about her cats. One of our gas team colleagues kindly offered to foster the cats, who were reunited with our tenant as soon as she was well enough to be home.

The outcome

Our tenant is now back in her home. She receives three care visits a day and help to keep her home clean. Other support Ann got in place for the tenant includes food parcels and local hairdressing and footcare services. She’s extremely grateful for the help she receives which has let her continue living in the place she’s called home for more than 50 years.
