A helpful checklist
Use this simple checklist to help you get prepared.
Have a look through your belongings and decide what you want to take with you. You can donate unwanted clothes, furniture or other household items to local charity shops or clothing banks.
Your local authority may also collect bulky items - sometimes at a reduced cost if you receive certain benefits
Think about how you’ll move your things into your new home. You can often get free boxes from local supermarkets or shops.
Label each box clearly and pack the items you’ll need first at the top so they’re easy to find when you arrive.
If you have friends or family with a car or van who can help, great! If not, try removal comparison websites or around locally for recommendations.
Our homes don’t come with furniture, flooring or white goods. Make sure you have the basics you’ll need for your first few days, especially if you’re on a tight budget.
Tip: If you’re struggling to afford essentials like flooring, a bed or white goods, check whether your local authority can help through welfare provisions or grant schemes. Here’s a helpful site to see what support might be available in your area – just search for your local council: Local Welfare Assistance Finder - End Furniture Poverty.
We also have a free Money Advice service that might be able to help. This is available via the Hub on 0345 60 20 540, but please make sure you check with your local authority and charities first.
Make a list of organisations and people who will need your new address. This may include:
- Universal Credit
- Banks
- Gas, electric and water suppliers
- GPs and dentist
- Insurance providers
- And any friends or family you want to keep updated
Give your current home a good clear and take photos once everything is empty. This helps avoid any unexpected charges after you move.
Save our Hub number - 0345 60 20 540 – so you can reach us easily if anything comes up once you’ve moved in.
It’s also a good idea to download our tenant app so you can report repairs, check your rent account, or get help with things link gas connection.
Before you get your keys, you’ll receive your tenancy agreement. Take time to read it carefully so you understand:
- Your responsibilities
- Our responsibilities to you
If you’re unsure about anything, just ask the Lettings team or the officer who meets you when you collect your key – they’re happy to help.
If you feel you need extra support when moving into your new home, let your Lettings Officer know. While we don’t provide our own support workers, we’ll always try to help make sure any support needs are identified before we offer you a property.
We want you to feel safe, comfortable and supported in your new home.
