Music, cake, and heart-warming memories were in order as our residents at Old Mill Close in Solihull came together to celebrate VE Day last week, marking 80 years since the end of World War II.
While enjoying a tea party, residents shared powerful stories of resilience and remembrance, honouring the end of World War II in Europe on 8th May 1945.
Resident Eva, who was 14 years old when the war ended, fondly remembered her memories of the day. “I remember standing in the front row of the crowds with my best friend, giving people the news that the war had ended and saluting everyone. It was a really special time.”
Listening to residents share their memories of VE Day and beyond truly made the celebrations extra special.
Sheila – the longest-running resident at Old Mill Close, having lived here 35 years – talked about her role as sergeant in the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force. “I scored the highest marks in my selection exam and became a sergeant. It was a difficult time, because all everyone wanted to do was go dancing and cycling, but we had a duty to fulfil, and I proudly took mine on.”
Eva recalled her relief, when all four of her brothers who served in the war returned home safely. “They all came back, and we were just so happy to see them, and so proud that they had served for their country.” Reflecting on the heartbreak and loss that also surrounded the war, she said: “Some families weren’t so lucky and lost loved ones or were never reunited. I will never forget how hearing those stories made me feel.”
Gathered under a marquee decorated in Union Jack bunting and balloons, classic wartime music played as residents took part in a raffle competition and bingo. Sandwiches, cakes, trifle – and the spell of dry weather – kept the party going!
Resident Pat, who regularly organises social events and gatherings for residents at Old Mill Close, talked about the importance of community in making people feel welcome, heard, and seen. “Whether it’s a birthday or Christmas or VE day, we try to get together in some way so people can feel that connection, no matter what’s happening in their lives. The laughter and fun we have is all worth it!”
After a fun-filled day with great food and beautiful stories, the residents of Old Mill Close are already looking forward to next year’s celebrations!
