Council tax pays for essential local services we all rely on, such as the police and education. When things are financially tight, it can be hard to know which bills to pay first. Council tax is a 'priority debt' and here are some simple steps you can take if you're struggling to pay.

What is a 'priority debt’?

A 'priority debt' is one where the consequences of non-payment can be serious. It isn't about the amount you owe, but the actions creditors (i.e. your local council) can take. Along with your rent and energy bills, council tax is a top priority because a local council has strong legal powers to collect the money, and so you should deal with it before other non-priority debts like credit cards.

What happens if I miss council tax payments?

If you miss a payment, the process will usually look like this:

  • Reminder notice: First, you'll get a reminder giving you seven days to pay.
  • Final notice: If you don't pay within seven days, you'll get a final notice demanding the whole year's council tax.
  • Court summons: The next step is a court summons. The council can get a 'liability order', which legally confirms you owe the debt.
  • Enforcement agents (Bailiffs): A liability order gives the council power to use enforcement agents, who can visit your home and take goods to cover the debt and their fees. They can also take money directly from your wages or certain benefits.
