With winter on the way, it won’t be long before we’re all switching on the heating to warm our homes. But with energy bills and the cost of living rising, many of us are more mindful of how long the heating stays on – and the cost. Fortunately, there are some initiatives aimed at giving you a financial helping hand to heat your home, such as the Winter Fuel Payment (WFP).

What is the Winter Fuel Payment?

It’s a payment of between £100 and £300 that’s paid by the Government to eligible people every year.

Who receives it?

You're eligible for Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) if you:

  • Were born before September 22, 1959
  • Earn £35,000 or less – if you earn £35,000+ and receive the payment, HMRC will deduct it from you (find out more about this here)
  • Live in England or Wales:
    • This includes if you live in a care home - however, you must either get Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance or;
    • Have lived in a care home since June 23, 2025 or earlier.

How is the amount I get calculated?

It’s based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 15 and 21, 2025.

  • If you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959: You get £200.
  • If you were born before 22 September 1945: You get £300.

Can people on benefits receive it?

Yes, but the amount differs, depending on the benefits you get. If you aren’t eligible for the WFP, but live with somebody who is, that person still receives it. For more information about this, visit: gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment/how-much-youll-get.

When is it paid?

The Government sends out letters in October/November to confirm the payment, which is made in November/December. To learn more about the Winter Fuel Payment, check out this official guidance.
