To roundup Safeguarding Adults Awareness Week 2025, we're sharing a tenant's journey to safety.  When a pregnant mum got in touch asking us to help her and her toddler escape an abusive relationship, one of our Tenancy Services Officers worked with our safeguarding partners to get her to safety.

The background

Miss KRR* got in touch with us as she was experiencing domestic violence. At the time, she was pregnant and had a toddler, which made her extremely vulnerable. She didn’t have any family members to turn to and no longer felt safe after being subjected to physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

How we helped

The matter was immediately assigned to a dedicated Tenancy Services Officer, who contacted Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid (BSWA) to see if they had any emergency accommodation for Miss KRR. The charity provides self-contained flats, supported accommodation, as well as support from on-site staff and crèche facilities. Miss KRR told us that moving to this type of environment would help her feel safe.

The outcome

BSWA were able to offer Miss KRR suitable and safe accommodation, so she packed a small bag and immediately moved in. Women’s Aid also set up a dual benefit claim for her. She was told to leave any devices, such as iPads and consoles, behind because the perpetrator could use them to track her down. Miss KRR was also told to:

  • Call 999 if she felt at immediate risk
  • Not share any details about where she had moved to with anybody or on social media
  • Block the perpetrator’s number and report any contact from them with the police.

A risk assessment was completed, and a multi-agency approach is being taken to safeguard Miss KBB. Our Tenancy Services Officer is working with BSWA, an independent domestic violence advisor, and the police to find a property Miss KBB can move into long term.

Making sure our tenants feel safe in their homes and their communities is extremely important to us. For more on our commitment to safeguarding tenants from abuse and neglect, you can read our Safeguarding Policy here.
