Tackling ASB in the community

Resident Talking To A Midland Heart Employee In A Big Room

We were getting various reports of antisocial behaviour from residents in one of our mixed tenure communities. This led to us stepping in and trying to resolve the problem.

What were the concerns?

We had a lot of calls and reports from residents around the antisocial behaviour in this community, ranging from parties going on until 4am, abusive behaviour towards other residents and fights taking place in communal areas.

We also had reports of damage to vehicles and pets misbehaving.

How did we help?

We organised a meeting with residents who had raised the concerns, alongside our Leasehold and Tenancy Services teams. We spoke through the issues in the community and explained there was a process we had to follow in order to be able to take action.

After this meeting, we asked for patrols to take place on site between 6pm – 11pm to monitor any antisocial activity, and we gathered evidence logs and CCTV footage from residents in the area.

We found that the majority of the reports were about the same property, so we sent a warning letter to the address asking them to change their behaviour and be more considerate towards their neighbours. We also arranged a joint visit to the property alongside the police, to ask the resident to sign an Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC).

We also sent out questionnaires to all residents in the area to gather any more concerns or reports, and continue to monitor the case on a regular basis and keep the community updated.

What was the outcome?

Following a court hearing and our submission of all the evidence, we were granted a full injunction for 2 years.

An injunction is a civil court order designed to stop or prevent a person from engaging in anti-social behaviour. It's a tool used to address issues like harassment, nuisance, or the potential for harm caused by a person's actions.

We recently held a community day to check in on residents and hear how they were getting on. We heard from lots of people that they had noticed a big improvement in their neighbourhood and that it felt much more peaceful!

Working in partnership

There are lots of different agencies that can help you if you're experiencing antisocial behaviour, such as the Police, your Local Authority and ourselves.

We all have different powers and responsibilities so working together is the best way to find a solution.

It's really important that if you believe a crime is being committed, or if you've been threatened or assaulted, you report this to the police immediately.
