What is fly-tipping?

Fly-tipping is when you dump household items in public spaces, but did you know that it’s illegal. If you get caught doing it, the local council can issue you fines of up to £50,000 – no one wants this.

When we’re out and about visiting neighbourhoods, some common things we’ve seen left by fly-tippers include:

  • Garden waste

  • Rubbish bags

  • Electrical goods

Even bulky waste items such as:

  • Fridges

  • Mattresses

  • Bathtubs

Bulky waste is basically large household items which are too big for your regular wheelie bins.

It’s important to note that the removal of fly-tipping, and bulky waste collections are not part of our landlord service.

Why does it matter?

Any fly-tipping removal increases clean-up costs, which can lead to higher service charges paid by all homes in your neighbourhood. This is something we want to avoid.

💡 Here’s what you can do instead:

  • Donate to charities

  • Visit your local free recycling centre

  • Call your local council

  • Exchange items when you buy a new product

💡 Here’s what the council are doing to help with fly-tipping:

  • Bulky waste service

  • Signposting to local recycling centres

  • Offering larger bins for a small charge

  • Helping with collection if you have difficulty moving your bin

💡 Here’s what we’re doing as your landlord:

  • Working with your local council

  • Taking tenancy action

  • Increasing lighting to deter fly-tipping

  • Signposting to local recycling centres

This financial year, we’ve spent over £35k on average each month on waste tipping costs – which isn’t part of our landlord service. Instead, we want to be investing that money elsewhere and reduce service charges for all our tenants.

How to report it

Your local authority handles fly-tipping, they can issue fines and prosecute. You can report this to them online or by phone. Visit your local authority website for more details.

If however, you’ve seen anyone fly-tipping on our land, you can report this to us on 0345 60 20 540 and we’ll investigate and take action.
