Fly-tipping affects your neighbourhood and it can increase service charges for everyone.
This page explains what fly-tipping and bulky waste are, why it matters, how you can get rid of unwanted items and how to report it if you see it.
What is fly-tipping?
Fly-tipping is when you get rid of household items in public spaces which is a criminal offence and you can get fines of up to £50,000.
Common types of fly-tipping include:
- Garden waste
- Commercial waste such as tyres or rubble
- Household items such as rubbish bags, electrical goods, mattresses etc
What is bulky waste?
Bulky waste is large household items which are too big for regular wheelie bins. To clear our any unwanted bulky waste, you can contact your local council for a collection service, take it to the local recycling centre or donate to charities.
Examples of bulky waste:
- Fridges
- Mattresses
- Bath tubs
- Generally, anything too big for your wheelie bin!
Who's responsible for what
Below is a breakdown of who looks after fly-tipping incidents and how you can report it 👇🏽
Fly-tipping removal and bulky waste collections are not part of our landlord services. So any removal increases clean up costs, which can lead to higher service charges paid by all homes in your neighbourhood.
This is something we want to avoid.
Managing waste properly and responsibly helps to reduce Rangers visits and keeps service charges down.
Did you know - fly-tipping can also attract pests and vermin, it's the perfect hiding spots and breeding ground for them.
Do you have furniture or bulky waste you want to get rid of?
This includes household items such as beds, wardrobes, sofas, as well as electrical items like vacuum cleaners, microwaves and fridges.
How to clear out unwanted items:
- Donate to charities - you can contact your local charity shop to donate your items.
- Visit your local free recycling centre - you can always recycle furniture and bulky items at your nearest household recycling centre.
- Call your local council - some councils offer bulky waste collection for a small charge.
- Exchange items when you buy a new product - some retailers will offer to take away your old or broken items when you buy a new one from them.
Remember - leaving unwanted items next to bins or in communal areas is also fly-tipping.
Here's what we're doing as your landlord:
- Working with your local council - we're making sure you have regular bin collections.
- Taking tenancy action - it's a breach of tenancy if we find evidence that you're fly-tipping.
- Increasing lighting - making sure there's enough lighting both indoors and outdoors to deter fly-tipping.
- Signposting - supporting you to find your nearest recycling centre

Here's what the council are doing to help with fly-tipping:
- Bulky waste service - some councils are offering bulky waste collection for a small charge.
- Signposting - recommending free local recycling centres you can visit.
- New bins - you can order larger bins or recycling bins for a small charge.
- Assisted collections - if you have genuine difficulty moving your wheeled bins, some councils will arrange to collect bins from an agreed collection point and return them.
