Staff at Midland Heart have hearts as big as £28k!

Midland Heart has raised almost £28,000 over the past two years for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, our chosen charity.

At a special event to mark the end of the two-year partnership, Chief Executive Glenn Harris handed over a cheque for £27,765 which will help people receiving palliative care from the hospice on site or in the community as well as ongoing support to their families.

Staff fundraising over the two years has amounted to almost £18,000, with Midland Heart contributing a further £10,000 in fund-matching, which includes donations of £1 for every employee engagement survey completed and received.

Glenn Harris said: “I am absolutely delighted to handover this amount of money to a charity that makes such a difference to the lives of local people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

“However, this is not only about money. It also represents the brilliant, big-hearted workforce we are fortunate to have at Midland Heart; staff who, time after time, go above and beyond their job role to help others. I am so proud of everyone who has contributed to raising this amount whether through undertaking a challenge, sponsoring a colleague, completing our engagement survey or just buying a cake!”

Colleagues chose Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice as their chosen charity for 2017/18 and again the following year. Fundraising events over the past 12 months have included a sky dive, a 5K chocolate run, a series of Ceilidhs and “jailing” a senior colleague until staff paid a whopping ransom to release him.

Pam Hodgetts, Corporate Partnerships Officer at the hospice, said: “For the past two years Midland Heart has been an incredible supporter of the hospice, raising almost £28,000 and forging a fantastic partnership that has seen us share expertise and offer each other insightful staff training sessions.

“The effort they have put in has been remarkable and their impressive total will help Birmingham St Mary’s provide vital services to more local people and families.”

Ricky Burt, Employee Engagement and Wellbeing Advisor, said: “The year 2017/18 was the first time we chose to support just one local charity, rather than several. This new approach has been really successful as it has enabled us to better engage our staff in the cause, raise more money, see the impact of our fundraising and develop an enduring relationship with Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice.”

He added that staff had enthusiastically got into the spirit of fundraising and engaged in activities, challenging themselves with sponsored events and showing huge generosity by contributing to our smaller fundraisers such as bake sales and raffles.

“And although staff have chosen a new charity – Midlands Air Ambulance - Charity for 2019/20 – we will maintain our relationship with the hospice through other initiatives,” he added.
